Board Member, Dr. Ruth Hayhoe Recognized

Global Award for Innovation in Educational Research Methods

The Global Award for Innovation in Educational Research Methods (GAIERM) was established in 2024 by East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai and the Tin Ka Ping Foundation to recognize breakthroughs in educational research.

At the 2025 award ceremony, Dr. Ruth Hayhoe received this prestigious distinction “in recognition of her transcending the limitations of Western-centric comparative research, developing and practicing a narrative research paradigm characterized by ‘dialogue among civilizations,’ providing the global education community with a more equal and generative comparative research approach, and promoting cross-cultural understanding and educational exchange on a global scale” (GAIERM Award Committee, 2025).

The other four 2025 award recipients were Stephen Raudenbush (University of Chicago), Manabu Sato (University of Tokyo), Wang Shanmai (Beijing Normal University), and Rupert Wegerif (University of Cambridge). View official announcement here.

The award ceremony was held on November 9, 2025, at East China Normal University in Shanghai. Dr. Hayhoe’s doctoral graduate, Dr. Hantian Wu, an alumnus of the LHAE program and currently a research professor and doctoral supervisor at Zhejiang University, accepted the award on her behalf, while Dr. Hayhoe delivered her keynote address via video.

The inaugural 2024 awardees included Stephen Ball (University of London), Annette Lareau (University of Pennsylvania), Herbert Marsh (Australian Catholic University), Min Weifang (Peking University), and Andreas Schleicher (OECD).
