100% True: Statistician Joins GSC

We are so glad to welcome Dr. Yawo Kobara to our academic fellowship! He is our first
mathematician and we have high hopes that he will a be a great addition that multiplies
our redemptive influence for the gospel in global higher education! Our God is the Lord
of all numbers, statistics, and equations!

Dr. Kobara is a global scholar in his very biography. He told us in his interview with us
that he was born in Togo, then he did his high school and bachelor’s degree in Ghana.
His first master’s degree was in Senegal, and his second was in the USA (Washington
DC), and his PhD is from Western University, London, Ontario. He is now at U Windsor,
and with praise, reports that his wife, Alima Nam’s application for a Visa has just been approved to come from Ghana to Canada this December.

Dr. Kobara is a professor of Statistical Mathematics, and he wants to serve overseas
when he is not teaching in Canada. He seeks to use his skills to discover and unfold the
wonders latent in God’s creation for the benefit of others. One way he does this is
through mathematical modeling of efficiencies for the health care system in Canada. His
research, for example, has affirmed the use of “step-down units” from the ICU to make
better use of space and nursing staff in the hospital, and his models are now finding
applications in other sectors. He has a number of publications where he is not the
principal researcher, but he is the statistical muscle that does the computations
necessary for the research in multiple sectors.

Dr. Kobara is a faithful member of a Deeper Life Church, which has its origins in Nigeria
with a math professor at the University of Jos named W.F. Kumuyi. There is a
congregation in Windsor where he serves as a youth leader. He is passionate about his
faith, which he sees as a response to the love of God in Jesus Christ. In our interview
with him, he spoke of the challenge to his faith when he was a stranger far from his
homeland and family, and how the fellowship of the church gave him strength.
When Yawo asked his wife why she wanted to marry a statistician, she said, “All the
statisticians I’ve met are so friendly.” We think this is true of Dr. Kobara as well.
