Andrew (Zhonghu) Yan

Dr. Andrew Yan joined Global Scholars Canada in 2026. He is a scholar of Chinese philosophy, religion,
and comparative thought, with a particular interest in the dialogue between Chinese intellectual traditions
and Christian theology. Dr. Yan received his PhD from the University of Toronto, where his doctoral research explored self-cultivation, society, and metaphysics in the Confucian Analects in the lens of Paul Tillich’s existentialist theology. He also holds an MA in Religious Studies from Brown University and a BA in English Language and Literature from Zhejiang University.

His academic career has included teaching and research appointments in North America, Africa, and
Asia. Andrew currently lectures in Philosophy and East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto and
serves as an adjunct lecturer at the Canadian Chinese School of Theology at Tyndale University.
Previously he taught at Hangzhou Normal University and held visiting positions at University of
Saskatchewan and Hope College.

Dr. Yan is the author of An Existential Reading of the Confucian Analects (Cambria Press, New York,
2011) – linked here – and its popular Chinese adaptation, When Existentialism Meets the Analects (Taiwan: Bifun Culture Press, 2025). He has published extensively on Chinese philosophy, spirituality, and comparative religion. He is currently working on a book provisionally titled The Dao and Logos: A Comparative Inquiry into Daoism and Christianity.

Through his work with Global Scholars Canada, Dr. Yan seeks to foster meaningful engagement between
Christian faith and Chinese intellectual traditions, and to support the development of Christian
scholarship for the Chinese academy and beyond.

Dr. Yan traces his lineage to Yan Hui, Confucius’s most esteemed disciple, who is traditionally honored as
Fusheng (“the Second-Coming Sage”). He is a sought-after speaker among Chinese communities both in Toronto and in China. He currently co-hosts a fellowship that brings together Christians who share a deep interest in Chinese culture and thought. He recently taught a very well-received course “Traditional Chinese Thought in Dialogue with Christian Theology” electronically for Malaysia Bible Seminary.

Dr. Yan is willing to visit your church or classroom to discuss his scholarship. He can give lectures on

Dr. Yan is married to Grace Liu, and they have two daughters, Ruwen and Rufei.

Vision & Mission Statement
Dr. Yan believes that, given the growing number of Christians in China and the richness and depth of
Chinese civilization, China is uniquely positioned to carry the light of the gospel to the world. In service
of this vision, his mission is to engage the gospel with the best ideas within Chinese civilization,
following a strategy similar to that adopted by Matteo Ricci. Through teaching, scholarship, and public engagement, he seeks to help root the gospel deeply in Chinese soil so that it may bear fruit both within China and throughout the world.

颜钟祜博士于2026年加入加拿大全球学者（GSC）。他的研究领域涵盖中国哲学、宗教及比较思想
，尤其关注中国思想传统与基督教神学之间的对话。
颜博士毕业于多伦多大学，获哲学博士学位。他的博士研究以保罗·蒂利希存在主义神学为理论视
角，探讨《论语》中之修身、社会与形上学问题。他同时拥有布朗大学宗教学硕士学位，以及浙
江大学英语语言文学学士学位。
在其学术生涯中，颜博士曾在北美、非洲及亚洲多地从事教学与研究工作。目前，他于多伦多大
学讲授哲学与东亚研究课程，并担任天道大学加拿大华人神学院兼职讲师。此前，他曾任教于杭
州师范大学，并曾在萨斯喀彻温大学(University of Saskatchewan) 与霍普学院（Hope College）担
任访问助理教授。
他著有 An Existential Reading of the Analects（纽约：Cambria Press，2011），并出版其通俗中文版
《当存在主义遇见〈论语〉》（台湾：毕方文化，2025）。他在中国哲学、灵性研究与比较宗教领域发表多篇学术论文。目前正撰写新书，暂定名为 The Dao and Logos: A Comparative Inquiry into Daoism and
Christianity（《道与逻各斯：道家与基督教的比较研究》）。
通过在加拿大全球学者的事工，颜博士致力于推动基督信仰与中国思想传统之间的深入对话，并
促进面向华人学术界及更广泛领域的基督教学术发展。
颜博士出自孔子高弟颜回之后裔。颜回为孔门最为器重之弟子，传统上被尊为“复圣”。颜博士在
多伦多及中国华人群体中广受欢迎，常受邀讲学。他目前共同带领一个团契，汇聚对中国文化与

思想具有深厚兴趣的基督徒。近期，他曾为马来西亚圣经神学院线上讲授课程《中华传统思想与
基督教神学的对话》，反响热烈。
颜博士乐意受邀前往教会或课堂分享其研究成果，讲授主题包括：

   颜博士与刘炜Grace女士结婚，育有二女：如雯、如霏。

愿景与使命宣言
颜博士认为，鉴于中国基督徒人数的不断增长以及中华文明本身的深厚底蕴，中国在将福音之光
传向世界方面具有独特的历史使命。基于这一愿景，他致力于将福音与中国文明中最优秀的思想
资源相结合，其策略可类比于历史上利玛窦的文化对话路径。
通过教学、研究与公共参与，他期望推动福音在中华文化土壤中深深扎根，使之在中国本土并在
全球范围内结出丰硕的果实。
